ROBERT McCaw (Letters, November 24) failed to include the £2.4 billion
subsidy paid by English and Welsh energy consumers to the Scottish
renewable sector. He did not mention that 92 per cent of the green levy tax
on Scottish energy bills is in fact paid by consumers south of the Border.
If Scottish consumers did not receive that subsidy then household energy
bills in Scotland would increase by around £930 per annum and, without the
support of Combined Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGT) plant in England, when the
wind fails to blow and the rain falls as snow, Scots would be subject to
winter black-outs as there is insufficient base load plant to meet the
5,000MW maximum winter demand.
In addition, Mr McCaw did not point out to your readers that Holyrood
pledged to eliminate fuel poverty by the end of 2016. Why then are
one-third of Scots still living under such poverty?
