Ruth Davidson, MSP, the Conservative Party leader in Scotland, should answer ‘for the long list of Tory failures on green energy’.

On the eve of her speech at a Scottish renewable industry ‘green energy’ event, the SNP last night said her party’s commitment to renewables “is not even skin deep”.

SNP MSP Graeme Dey said: “Ruth Davidson has a real brass neck in facing Scotland’s renewable energy industry considering her party’s shameful record.

  • “The Tory’s record of shame on the environment includes:
  • A Scottish Tory manifesto commitment to oppose the development of onshore wind – the lowest cost form of renewable generation
  • Signing off on a new nuclear power plant at Hinkley Point, locking bill payers into a 35-year contract at enormously bad value
  • Zealous support for fracking, despite the opposition of local communities
  • Betraying a promise of £1 billion investment in Carbon Capture and Storage technology, expected to be based at Peterhead – which would have created up to 600 jobs and capture up to 15 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions
  • Cutting subsidies to renewables, putting 1 in 6 jobs in the industry at risk – praised by the Scottish Tories, and:
  • No new money in the UK budget to support renewables.”

The Director of Friends of the Earth Scotland last week criticised the Tories for accepting a donation from the funder of prominent climate change sceptics the Global Warming Policy Foundation as “a disgrace”.
