Many of you will remember John Etherington. The following is a note from David Bruce sent to us by his partner Gillian Bishop.
I was very saddened to be told by Angela Kelly that John Etherington has
just died.
John, who retired as reader in ecology at the University of Wales in
Cardiff in 1990, was among those who seemed to stir the wind-power lobby to
heights of venom unusual even by its poor standards.
Views of Scotland veterans will remember how patiently he mentored us in
the early days, especially those of us who discussed technical and
political issues on a little forum we ran at the time. Not one of VoS’s
many publications went out before John’s critical eye had been cast over it
– such standards we managed to set were down in no small part to his
guidance. He was personally most helpful when I later began to study the
basics of what currently passes for the “science” of climate.
Perhaps one of his last contributions was also one of his best, his book
“The Wind Farm Scam”. He must have been gratified that it’s still selling
after several reprints and ten years since first publication.
