South Ayrshire wind farms produced 4.2 per cent of the UK’s electricity generated by wind power last year according to figures from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
The South Ayrshire wind farms generated roughly 1,350 gigawatts per hour (GWh) throughout 2019, 95 per cent of total renewable electricity from the region.
The remaining five per cent was made up of plant biomass, and anaerobic digestion, which is the breakdown of organic material by micro-organisms to produce biogas.
Offshore and onshore wind farms across the UK generated a total of around 32,000GWh last year.
At the end of 2019 there were 52 ‘Onshore Wind Installations’ in South Ayrshire, this figure includes locations where just one turbine has been erected as well as the larger wind farms and so is not the number of turbines in total.
A better indication is the amount of ‘Installed Capacity (MW)’.
The South Ayrshire local authority area, at 653.2MW has the fourth highest
