The timing would have rarely go wrong. Only a week after Boris Johnson helped large-scale expansion of offshore wind farms to power all UK homes, the National Grid was forced to issue a rare warning.

“The unusually low wind power that coincides with the shutdown of many generators means that the cushion of reserve capacity to operate the system has decreased,” warned last month about the “narrow margin” of the UK grid. ..

The warning was a catnip to the opponents of the “windmill” — and there was more to follow. Last week, National Grid issued two power margin notices. This is the most serious supply security warning since 2016, citing low wind farm output as one of the causes and urgently calling for increased power.
