Households living near big new power lines should receive lump sum compensation payments to smooth the way for a massive upgrade of Britain’s electricity grid, the government’s independent adviser has said.
Communities affected by new pylons and cables required to hit climate goals should also share in “generous” benefits packages such as home energy efficiency upgrades, Nick Winser, Britain’s electricity networks commissioner said.
Payments and benefits could potentially be worth millions of pounds for every kilometre of new overhead lines, as this would still be cheaper than burying the cables underground, Winser suggested.
