Anti-windfarm campaigners have hit out at a report claiming communities are set for a cash bonanza thanks to turbines.
The study, commissioned by South of Scotland Enterprise, claims hundreds of million pounds could be generated for Dumfries and Galloway over the next 35 years thanks to community benefit funds.
To reach that figure, the region’s current onshore windfarm capacity would need to be more than doubled.
Trevor Procter of the Save Mochrum Fell Group, which successfully fought against the Glenkens proposal, said: “Developers are always keen to stress community benefit but it is not a part of planning and should not be used to sweeten the disastrous consequences of having a windfarm within your community.
“The developers’ approach is to offer a community benefit fund – but they offer absolutely no help or compensation to those who live next door to the proposed windfarm.
“Our experience of community benefit is that it is very divisive. Windfarms are generally sited in rural areas where any additional income is seen as a bonus, but the destruction of the iconic scenery and the loss of income from tourism cannot be compensated for by such a paltry sum.”
