Galloway residents could “sleepwalk” into accepting a new national park because of a “vacuum of information” from the Scottish Government, say campaigners.
The plans have fiercely divided people in south-west Scotland, with many locals delighted by the idea and others – notably those from the farming community – bitterly opposed.
A packed protest meeting with officials from the NatureScot quango was held last week in Castle Douglas, with more than 300 people squeezing into the Wallet Marts Sales arena (despite A75 roadworks adding a 96-mile diversion from the west).
A series of questions were put to the panel, led by NatureScot’s Head of People & Places Pete Rawcliffe, but campaigners say they were astonished at the lack of information the officers were able to provide.
However, they did confirm the new national park would have no power to block new wind farms and there was no plan to limit the number of onshore wind turbines. A consultation on the plans is due to get underway later this month.
