When confronted by complaints about wind farms, the Scottish Government notoriously insists that only the right wind farms in the right places are consented. One way of testing whether the planning system really delivers this outcome is to compare the actual impacts of operational wind farms against those predicted in Environmental Statements attached to applications.

At SAS’s instigation, the Scottish Government has agreed to commission a study to compare predicted landscape/visual, noise and shadow flicker impacts with actual ones. The study is expected to take 14 months and has a budget of £100,000. The closing date for tenders is 4 June 2013 and further details can be found at http://climatexchange.org.uk/index.php/latest-news

ClimateXChange is a collaborative initiative between sixteen of Scotland’s leading research and higher education institutions. We do research on climate change directly linked to the Scottish policy agenda. Our members provide evidence base for Scottish Government policy through timely and objective research evidence and expert advice.

If you know of any landscape or noise experts with relevant experience who could be interested, please pass on the news.

SAS has also been awarded two seats on the Steering Group for the study and we are currently compiling a list of wind farms we will lobby for inclusion. If you have suggestions, please contact GrahamLang@scotlandagainstspin.org
