There are at least two things that bother me about Ed Miliband’s Labour party conference speech yesterday. The first is how much territory it needlessly concedes to David Cameron’s worthless coalition. Obviously I’m not remotely agin Britain being run by a Conservative government, so long as it’s a proper Conservative government that does proper Conservative things like cutting taxes, reducing the size of the state, and so on. What Miliband has done here with his lurch to the Left is to have given David Cameron a free pass: it has made his anaemic centrism suddenly look like bleeding red meat; it has created clear blue water between LibLabCon where hitherto none existed.
