A wind turbine which towers over the links at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club has
been switched off as some of the greatest golfers in the world play in its
shadows.

Organisers of the European Tour and the club requested that the device,
belonging to energy firm Rubberatkins, should be powered down during the
course of the tournament.

There had been concerns that noise and shadow might affect play.

A spokesman for the European Tour said: “During the planning meetings we
held at the golf club, the issue of the wind turbine came up as a general
point.

“We both agreed we would ask the company if it wouldn’t mind to turn it off
during the week, because of potential noise and shadows. The company said
there was absolutely not a problem is doing so.”
