OPPONENTS are up in arms over plans to erect an windfarm substation at the
site of the Battle of Prestonpans.
Council planners recommend granting permission for the substation at the
battlefield where Bonnie Prince Charlie defeated government forces in 1745.
The substation would take power from a proposed offshore wind farm which
would be strung out along up to 13 miles of the Angus coast to the National
Grid.
But the Battle of Prestonpans 1745 Heritage Trust want the plans to build
on the battlefield thrown out and are “incredulous” that Historic Scotland
believes the development does not raise issues of “national significance”.
A report set to go before East Lothian Council’s planning committee on
Tuesday reveals the “majority” of the site is “within the boundary of the
battle”.
