RECENTLY I came across a quote from the lawyer and writer Raja Shehadeh’s
book Palestinian Walks which advised that “people should be encouraged to
walk in the hills. It will increase their attachment to their country.” He
himself often came from his home in Ramallah to walk on the Scottish hills.
It is a tragedy that so many politicians, environmentalists and wind farm
promoters do not understand this sentiment in their ruthless determination
to industrialise our landscapes which so shape the Scots’ love of their
land and attracts many others to put down their roots here.
It is becoming increasingly obvious to Scots, both native and adopted, that
this betrayal, this desecration resulting from wind-farming, is serving no
useful purpose in either economic or environmental terms.
As a consequence our landscapes are being destroyed to no end other than
that of filling the coffers of multi-national companies and landowners and
thus increasing inequality, as alluded to by Eric Davidson (Letters,
September 7).
