I THOUGHT your leader writer was being somewhat pusillanimous (“There are
no easy answers on poverty”, The Herald, December 30). Of course there are
easy answers for a party which promotes itself as being the only party
which can be relied upon to protect the powerless, the weak and the
dispossessed, a party which proclaims that the Scots are almost unique in
their concern for those at the margins of society and in their preparedness
to sacrifice their own best interests as a practical expression of that
concern.
But there are indeed no easy answers for a party which reveals its true
colours in its freezing of council tax for nine consecutive ye(ars in the
interests of the better off and in its enthusiasm for “regressive renewable
subsidies” which “are a burden for those in fuel poverty” Letters, December
30), the principal beneficiaries of which are landowners and multi-national
energy companies.
