The chief executive of the Renewable Energy Association – the biggest such trade body in the UK – has welcomed the call by MPs to break up the National Grid monopoly.
MPs on the Commons’ Energy Committee made the call in their report last week on Low Carbon Infrastructure, to which the REA provided evidence.
Dr Nina Skorupska, CBE, REA Chief Executive, said: “This report couldn’t be more timely. With the industry moving towards a decentralised system, it is clear the government and regulators needs to catch-up. Energy storage, DSR and smart grid upgrades are all vital and are quickly becoming a reality.
“The grid network has become an important part of the picture for renewables and is a major block on development in some areas. This will become increasingly so in the future as we move to subsidy free projects.
“We are pleased that the committee agree with our members that reforms are needed to the grid connection system, that the gas grid must accommodate new clean fuels and that energy storage, while offering great potential, needs to be freed from elements of regulation.
“This is all part of shift to a decentralised energy system which we know holds much promise but requires work to progress, something we will be helping our members transition towards.
“With negative changes and tariff reductions occurring in green gas, setting a target may be a route for what should be a strategic, low-carbon, and domestic energy source for the UK.”
