The Scotsman could never be accused of bias, since readers’ letters are published giving opposing views such as pro -SNP and anti-SNP and pro-renewables and anti-renewables.
The anti-renewables side was stated in the excellent letter from Linda Holt demolishing the article “Renew the big push on renewables” by WWF employee Fabrice Leveque (letters 5 November).
He suggests that Scotland can meet its climate targets in a cost effective way. Cost effective is not how those struggling to pay their bills would describe renewables electricity.
Scotland has 3,000 wind turbines and another 2,200 with planning consent and developers scrambling to erect them before the renewables obligations is axed in April.
It’s all about harvesting subsidies, not saving the planet.
Leveque claims Scotland will be able to “export surplus generation to our neighbours” but as Linda Holt pointed out, Scotland is already regularly importing coal and nuclear electricity from England.
He talks about achieving climate targets but fails to mention that Scotland has only 0.13 per cent of global emissions.
Scotland could take the aircraft out of the sky, only allow electric vehicles on the roads and let people freeze to death but the rest of the world will continue to burn fossil fuels.
