A wake-up call on wind

IT was good to see DB Watson’s letter (Letters, December 5) challenging the
WWF assertion in The Energy of Scotland Report that as renewables grow in
the future “there is little or no need for conventional generating capacity
in Scotland”. Although it is not possible for me to confirm the figures
quoted, it should certainly be a wake-up call for the Scottish Government.
As stated, 59 per cent of Scottish manufacturers believe that they are
vulnerable to energy shortages and there is every reason to believe we are
heading for an imminent energy crisis.

Hunterston B and Torness are currently providing one-third of Scotland’s
power but their operational capacity cannot be extended continuously, and
with the Scottish Government snubbing the import of US shale gas at Ineos,
if we don’t take action soon, it will be incapable of producing sufficient
electricity to meet the needs of industry, let alone see how our national
grid will cope with the progressive switch to plug-in power for low
emission vehicles.

If the Scottish Government continues with its second referendum navel
gazing, and its fixation with dependency upon renewables, it would appear
that we are in a race to the bottom.

I WAS interested in your report on the record wind power output on
Wednesday ,December 7 (“Record for generating wind power, The Herald,
December 9) and the comments by Emma Pinchbeck emphasising the reliable
contribution of wind power as part of our energy system.

It would be interesting to compare this specific output record with the
same period on the previous six Wednesdays, as a measure of consistency and
reliability.
