Detailed plans for a wind farm near Hawick have been unveiled.
Glasgow-based Energiekontor have applied for permission to erect a total of
12 turbines on land at Harwood Estate.
Seven of the turbines will reach a height of 158.5 metres while the
remaining five will be 130 metres.
Over the past year the developer has met with community councils in the
area, held an open day on the estate near Bonchester Bridge, and staged
public exhibitions in both Bonchester and Denholm.
It is estimated that the wind farm will generate enough electricity to
power more than 22,000 houses.
A spokesman for Energiekontor highlighted the local benefits of the
development. He stated: ” Local business will have the opportunity to
benefit from the contracting requirement to be awarded by Energiekontor.
“These range from civil engineering and ground work contractors, haulage
business through to suppliers of water, as well as locals service based
companies including hotels, restaurants and local shops.
“There is also a proposal to develop a Shared Ownership Scheme to allow the
community to benefit further through the ability to invest in the
development and receive an annual return to reinvest into community projects.”
The 624 hectare site, known locally as Pines Burn, is four miles from
Bonchester Bridge and five miles from Hawick.
The proposals highlight an entrance to the site will be created from the B6399.
The full planning application will be considered by Scottish Borders
Council over the coming months.
