SSE announces completion of £350m Highland wind project – Energy Voice

Published by SAS Volunteer on December 12, 2018 December 12, 2018

Written by David McPhee
Scottish energy firm SSE has announced the completion of a £350 million
Highland wind project.
SSE Renewables said last night it had commissioned the 66 turbine
Stronelairg wind farm, near Fort Augustus, ahead of schedule and on budget.
It boasts a total capacity of 288 megawatts (MW).
The finalisation of Stronelairg takes the firm’s onshore wind farm capacity
to 2,143MW, with a total renewable energy capacity of 3,955MW.
SSE said it could look to sell off stakes in both the Stronelairg and
Dunmaglass developments but will retain its position as operator.
The energy firm said the sale would be “in line with SSE’s strategy to
create value from developing and operating assets, as well as owning them”.
Martin Pibworth, wholesale director at SSE, said:  “To have completed
Stronelairg ahead of schedule and on budget, despite the additional
challenges associated with its altitude and the weather conditions
experienced in the winter of 2017/18, is a tribute to the skill and
professionalism of the teams that designed, developed and built the wind farm.
“Its completion confirms SSE’s position as the owner and operator of the
most renewable energy capacity across the UK and Ireland.
“Through SSE Renewables, we want to build on our established skills in
asset management and large capital project development to achieve future
growth and maximise our contribution to the ongoing decarbonisation of the
electricity system.”
The completion of the Beatrice Offshore Windfarm next year will take SSE
Renewables total capacity to 4,190MW.
SSE’s future onshore wind farm pipeline consists of over 800MW new-build
projects.
