Troubled Scottish manufacturer Burntisland Fabrication (Bifab) is set to lose out on a lucrative contract in Scottish waters for the second time, raising fresh fears for its survival.
Bifab, which is part-owned by the Scottish government, originally lost out on work on the giant Seagreen wind farm, in the Firth of Forth, to a Chinese company — a decision that caused outcry last year.
However, Seagreen’s owner, Scottish-based SSE Renewables, has now abandoned plans to give key fabrication work to China, but will announce that it has awarded the contract to a number of European yards, snubbing Bifab for the second time in six months.
Trade Union GMB said the decision made a mockery of the Scottish Government’s commitment to “green jobs” in Scotland.
