Remember when Scotland was going to be the Saudi Arabia of renewables? A decade ago the Scottish government claimed its “green energy revolution” would create 28,000 direct jobs in the offshore wind sector and lead to £7.1bn of investment within a decade.
Back in the real world, official figures show there are just 1,700 full-time jobs in Scotland’s offshore wind sector.
Scottish firms have lost out on hundreds of millions of pounds of green work to foreign firms, most recently on the Seagreen and the Neart Na Gaoithe (NnG) offshore wind farms.
The award of even a handful of jackets is testimony to how hard the management at DF Barnes has worked. But it begs the question over why a company that remains part-owned by the Scottish government cannot win substantial work on a pair of schemes that are heavily backed by government.
