The Swedish developers of what would be one of the biggest windfarms in the world off the Norfolk coast are angry after a final decision on the project was delayed again by the Government.

An announcement about Norfolk Vanguard was due today. But that’s now been postponed until July 1st.

The 1.8GW development, would be built 47km off the coast at Winterton Ness.

Making the decision Alok Sharma the Secretary of State for Business Energy and Industrial strategy said

I have decided to re-set the statutory deadline for this application to 1 July 2020.

As that decision had already been postponed from December developers Vattenfall were far from impressed with this latest setback

Norfolk Vanguard is one of the most innovative and ambitious offshore wind projects in the world.

Yet this is now the second time it has suffered a delay, despite addressing all of the major concerns raised during the planning process.

The offshore wind industry will be left wondering about the Government’s intentions for this sector.

We’re in a race against time to reduce emissions and need to respond to the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, yet crucial infrastructure decisions are being put on hold.

For every day that goes by without a decision, there are consequences for the next phase of the project, so it’s vital that there are no further delays.

– Danielle Lane, Vattenfall,

Vattenfall also say Vanguard would create jobs and other opportunties for companies in Norfolk.

If it does finally get the go-ahead the wind farm could produce enough energy to power 1.3 million homes.
