Holyrood has announced that former Transport Secretary Michael Matheson will take over responsibility for Scottish energy policy.

Matheson will assume the new role of Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero, Energy and Transport, which will encompass transport, environmental protection, energy and COP26 delivery.

He served as Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity from 2018 until the parliamentary election this month and was Justice Secretary between 2014 and 2018.

The news was announced as Nicola Sturgeon reshuffles her cabinet after being confirmed as First Minister for a third term yesterday.

Previous Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse had to be replaced after he failed to regain his seat at the 6 May election.

Reacting to the news, trade body Scottish Renewables chief executive Claire Mack said: “The appointment of a Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero, Energy & Transport is a welcome acknowledgement of the importance of the renewable energy industry and reflects Scottish Renewables’ request of the new Scottish Government in our manifesto for the recent election.

“The establishment of this key position demonstrates that our industry is now a central part of Scotland’s economy and, of course, our transition to a net-zero carbon society.

“I congratulate Michael Matheson on his appointment and look forward to working with him in his new position, which builds upon the work carried out as Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity, as well as with other Cabinet members whose portfolios include areas in which our members are active.”  https://renews.biz/69681/sturgeon-unveils-new-scottish-energy-minister/
