October 6 (Renewables Now) – One of the turbines at Tararua wind farm 3 of New Zealand renewable power generator Mercury NZ Ltd (NZE:MCY) has caught fire.

Mercury said it has been notified of the incident on Wednesday afternoon by the wind farm operator, Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS).

There was smoke from one of the turbines resulting from a localised fire on the turbine. Emergency services were called to attend the incident. There was nobody near the turbine at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

The turbines in that area of the wind farm have temporarily been paused and site personnel have started an incident investigation, Mercury said.

A string of five turbines will probably be out of service for several weeks because of the incident.

Mercury does not expect a material impact on revenue.

Located in the Tararua Ranges, in the lower North Island of New Zealand, the third stage of the Tararua wind farm was commissioned in 2007. It is made up of 31 Vestas V90-3.0 turbines.

Mercury took ownership of the wind farm with its acquisition of Tilt Renewables’ New Zealand operations in a deal completed in the summer that saw Powering Australian Renewables (PowAR) acquire Tilt’s Australian subsidiaries.
