The operator of one of the first commercial wind farms in the Highlands has become the latest granted permission to extend its lifespan.
Renewable Energy Systems Ltd’s six turbines on the former US Navy communications base at Forss, nine kilometres north-west of Thurso, will now all remain in operation until November 2033.
The first two turbines went live in 2003 and were due to be decommissioned in 2026.
But the company has now been given consent to keep them up for a further seven years.
That will put them in line with the designated lifespan of the other four newer 50-metre turbines developed on Forss Business and Technology Park.
The extension was approved under delegated powers to Highland Council planning officials.
The move, which was unopposed, is expected to provide extra power to meet the annual needs of 1500 households as well as displacing 15,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
