Following intervention from SAS, the journalist, David Walker reworded this article. We asked him to add “This is however, offshore and onshore wind combined as Scotland still leads the way with onshore wind farms compared to the rest of the UK.
Scotland is only half the size of England but has more than twice as many onshore turbines.”
An SNP strategist has been slapped down on social media in a fake new storm after claiming that UK’s wind power is “largely Scotland-based”.
Ross Colquhoun tweeted during Prime Minister Questions on Wednesday to claim that “largely Scotland-based wind power and oil very topical at this current PMQs.”
Boris Johnson and Keir Starmer were discussing how sanctions on Russian oil would impact households across the UK, with the country needing to become self-sufficient for energy.
However, Colquhoun’s tweet was criticised by Sam Taylor, who runs the pro-union think tank These Islands.
He revealed that the SNP man was spreading misinformation and proved it by posting a picture of the electricity generated by fuel for the whole of the UK.
Taylor added: “SNP strategist believes UK wind power is ‘largely Scotland-based’. In 2020, the UK generated a total of 75.4TWh of electricity from wind, of which 23.1TWh was generated in Scotland, 31% of the total. UK wind power is largely rUK-based.”
The chart showed that while Scotland (23.1TWH) was producing significantly more wind power than Wales and Northern Ireland, they still lagged majorly behind England (43.1TWH).
This is however, offshore and onshore wind combined as Scotland still leads the way with onshore wind farms compared to the rest of the UK.
Scotland is only half the size of England but has more than twice as many onshore turbines.
In terms of total energy production, Scotland produced 51.9TWH which is much less than their English counterparts across the border (226.1TWH).
A total of 311.9TWH was produced in the UK in 2020, which means that Scotland was behind 16 per cent of the total for the whole of the UK. https://www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk/…/snp-strategist…
