It is time the Scottish Government did the right thing and gave us parity with England. They tell us they want to give more power to Scotland’s communities to have their voices heard in decisions that matter to them but where wind farms are concerned they are conveniently deaf. They are quick to quote Polls showing the majority of people support onshore wind farms so why are they so reluctant to allow us to make the decision on whether or not we want one in our community? They should have nothing to fear if their Polls are accurate.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak looks set to retain a ban on new onshore wind farms in England.
Sunak said that he would “stick with what we said in our manifesto” after he was asked directly whether he would lift the ban by Labour MP Alan Whitehead at Prime Minister’s Questions today.
He added that he is focused on “more renewables, more offshore wind and more nuclear”.
The Conservative Party manifesto currently rules out construction of new onshore wind turbines in England.
It comes just weeks after his predecessor Liz Truss appeared to lift the ban in a Treasury growth plan launched as part of the now notorious mini budget.
In it, her then chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng confirmed onshore wind planning policy would be “brought in line with other infrastructure to allow it to be deployed more easily in England”.
Sunak’s response follows a report by the Daily Telegraph that he pledged to keep the ban on building new onshore wind farms while on the campaign trail during the summer.
