Week 2 of the Cumnock Chronicle’s series on wind farms around New Cumnock.
CAMPAIGNERS aiming to stop the creation of more wind farms in and around the “overwhelmed” New Cumnock area have called for a line to be drawn.
The New Cumnock Wind Farms group has claimed that there could be as many as nearly 800 wind turbines within a 20km radius of the village, if all proposed developments are passed.
Members of the group have regularly been in touch with developers, the local authority and local representatives about the expanding list of sites over recent years.
As part of the Chronicle’s wind farms series, the group was keen to point out the variety of issues faced over the years.
“New Cumnock is no stranger to wind farms,” they said.
“I don’t think many locals would disagree that it’s gone too far. Initially, I thought the odd wind farm here and there was doing our part but we’re clearly
being overwhelmed, and it’s being allowed to continue unchecked.
“There has been no forward thinking. Areas like Glen Afton, a real asset to East Ayrshire, should never have been touched.
“I’ve travelled across Scotland, and Glen Afton is truly beautiful. There are surely less scenic locations that would have been more appropriate in the first instance.
