PLANS for a 200m-high wind turbine on Irvine’s Meadowhead Industrial Estate have been submitted to North Ayrshire Council.
The Farm Energy Company has applied for planning permission for the turbine, which will be used to power operations at the nearby GSK factory.
There are already four wind turbines on the site and the applicant said that, if approved, the new one will help GSK move closer to net zero emissions.
If approved, construction work is expected to take around a year and the turbine will have an expected lifespan of 25 years, with an energy generating capacity of approximately 7MW.
At 200m, the turbine will be significantly bigger than most of the others in Ayrshire.
The Farm Energy Company said in its submitted documents: “It is acknowledged that wind turbine schemes across Ayrshire have typically been restricted to approximately 115m-125m to tip.
“Discussions directly with the turbine manufacturers (Enercon) have revealed that turbines of 125m tip have been phased out in the UK and new models of this tip height are no longer available for emerging projects, such as the GSK Irvine expansion. “Indeed, as the onshore wind industry continues to progress it has been made clear that even the 150m tip height turbines will be phased out in the next couple of years with the industry average being around 180m.”  https://www.irvinetimes.com/news/25351595.wind-turbine-plan-submitted-irvine-industrial-estate/?fbclid=IwY2xjawL3Hw9leHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHgAFy4V2QmHGrAy-IrPNxiGiWnID0hJ_tuHYoxNwrNyInBQKQYCxDXYu5zqn_aem_a2C0b2gw3oxXC-m9MW4_ZQ
