Facing the music – it’s time to tune out green politics
While listening to the Sound of Silence the other day, it occurred to me that the song’s lyrics could stand as a testament to the way that the net zero policy is working out.
The reference to my old friend, darkness, is a metaphor for the fact that before scientific advancement and the industrial revolution, a state of darkness was how many people spent every night and much of the winter. Now we’re returning to that state, or we will be if urgent steps aren’t taken to instil some common sense into UK energy policy. The softly creeping vision is net zero, and we’re sleep-walking to disaster. The sound of silence is the silence of once-great manufacturing industries shutting down as we export our emissions, jobs and manufacturing to less environmentally-concerned countries abroad, mostly to China and other Asian states.

As for the flash of a neon light, I am reminded of the bizarre neon sign installed beside the M8 during COP26 in Glasgow, with its gibberish “IT IS GREEN THINKS NATURE EVEN IN THE DARK” for the faithful to bow and pray before it. The people hearing without listening are the “green” politicians and lobbyists urging net zero on the rest of us without paying any attention to what the rest of us think. No one has – until now – dared to disturb the sound of silence, because for too long we have had a Uniparty consensus around net zero, and anyone who questioned it was labelled a climate denier. Those who did speak out were ignored, their words falling like silent raindrops, as the net zero zealots refused to have a discussion, and refused to be led to common sense. But now the prophets, the ordinary people who live in the tenements and use the subway, the people who the net zero zealots despise, will be heard!
Thankfully, the net zero consensus, that has caused so much economic and environmental damage, is crumbling. Its demise can’t come a moment too soon.
