A RETIRED Dounreay specialist says responding to renewable energy planning applications is taking over his retirement.
Dr John Heathcote was the principal specialist at Dounreay, where he worked on the decommissioning of the nuclear project and co-chaired its environmental committee.
The objector to Carn Fearna Wind Farm acknowledges his engineering and science background [has come in handywhen his community is left to battle numerous renewable energy planning applications.
He added: “It’s more or less become a full-time job for me and it’s not how I intended to spend my retirement, there’s nobody else to do it.
“The really important consultation documents that come out, they’re deadly and no member of the public who hasn’t got a strong interest and infinitely strong coffee is ever going to read them.”
One of the most recent planning applications to come his way was the Carn Fearna Wind which earlier in the month (December 8th) was objected to by Highland Council.
But the 1000-hectare site falls under section 36 of the Electricity Act, so it’s the Scottish Government who will make the final call.
