A campaign group in Sutherland is raising serious concerns about a proposed renewable energy project, which involves the construction of a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS ) just 400 metres from several homes.
German energy company RWE has submitted an application to build the Inveroykel Wind Farm on land owned by Forestry and Land Scotland in Inveroykel and Rhelonie Forest. The site lies 1.7km west of Bonar Bridge and 8.7km south of Lairg.
The scheme comprises 20 turbines of up to 240m in height – more than twice the height of the Rosemarkie transmittor – and a massive BESS as well as ancillary infrastructure.
Dutton, spokesperson for No Ring of Steel (NORoS) Kyle of Sutherland, says the area is already contributing its fair share towars Scotland’s renewable energy targets.
Designed to store electricity generated by the wind farm before it is released to the grid, the BESS would comprise 144 container units, measuring in total 210 metres by 79 metres and occupying an area larger than two football fields
The wind farm and battery storage facility would have a combined generating capacity of up to 262 megawatts. This would make it one of the largest developments in Scotland to contain both turbines and a BESS compound.  https://www.northern-times.co.uk/news/campaigners-raise-alarm-over-planned-wind-farm-in-sutherland-429180/
