Residents living in a Highland beauty spot are fighting plans for almost 150 battery energy storage system (BESS) units being built within 400m of their homes. The area in the Kyle of Sutherland earmarked for the containers would be bigger than two football fields.Opponents say the proposed Inveroykel development will also impact on those living in nearby Culrain village, with 144 BESS units erected to store energy generated from an accompanying windfarm. The plans submitted by energy giant RWE will see the construction of 20 wind turbines, some as high as 230 metres.
Tisi Dutton, a spokesperson for campaign group No Ring of Steel Kyle of Sutherland (NORoS), said: “The RWE plans would be devastating for the local community and are totally out of step for such a biodiverse, scenic and rural location.
