Protecting our Mountains: The MCofS position statement on onshore wind farms

The Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MCofS) believes that commercial wind farms threaten to industrialise and irreparably damage our nation’s most precious mountains and wild lands. These landscapes are of immeasurable value for their wildness and scenic beauty. Bold, pragmatic and urgent action is needed to protect them.

Climate change must be fought by creating clean energy sources, and onshore wind farms have their role to play. Even in the mountain areas we seek to protect, we appreciate that there should be opportunities for small-scale wind power generation primarily for local power and income. But the profits of wind farm companies and landowners must not outweigh the inherent value of Scotland’s historic landscape, which is what appears to be happening at present.
