Under-fire windfarm manufacturer BiFab has secured a slice of a £2billion pound offshore engineering contract.

It is hoped the deal will boost the firm’s fortunes and secure 200 jobs at its mothballed yards in Fife and Arnish in the Western Isles.

In May, the Daily Record revealed shock plans by energy giant EDF to award the full contract for the Neart na Gaoithe windfarm to a firm in Indonesia.

The decision will mean shipping completed turbines halfway around the world to the Fife coast.

Union bosses described yesterday’s announcement that BiFab will build just eight of the project’s 53 jackets as a “very small crumb of comfort” and a “paltry return”.
