The construction of onshore Scottish windfarms has created 4.9 million tons of emissions – which are then gradually offset during the lifetime of the turbines.
But the payback time can be as long as 10.8 years.
The developments which create by far the most emissions are those built on peatland.
At worst, these turbines are no greener than burning gas or coal.
The authors suggest there is a need for tighter restrictions on where windfarms can be put up.
