Following on from our post  earlier this week about the turbines turning when there is no wind, we have discovered that yes, turning the blades and gear box, weighing several tons does consume a vast amount of electricity, (as you might expect), but that this is not declared and the amount of electricity consumed by wind turbines even during operation, but particularly in cold and damp weather (eg Scotland) is not declared in manufacturers literature! So much for accountability in the ‘just transition’ to Net Zero .
The reality is that when there is no wind, turbines are still using up expensive and limited electricity – which is probably being generated by gas and nuclear power stations. The same is true for BESS which continually consume electricity even when they’re contributing nothing to the grid.
So imagine our surprise when a walk through a wind farm yesterday showed a diesel generator at the base of one turbine and very worrying clunking noises coming from another turbine (@ 13 years old)
