Over the next few years, Britain faces an energy crisis. All the encouraging economic figures will quickly be reversed if the lights go out or fuel prices soar. The country is increasingly reliant upon foreign gas to generate electricity, principally because we are shutting coal-fired power stations in order to comply with EU pollution laws. The irony is that coal is now cheap because America is exporting record amounts as it switches to shale gas.
