It is with a mix of excitement and real sadness that I’ve just booked my traditional week in the Cairngorms, the same last week of February that’s been a highlight of my annual calendar for a decade. Being one of those who’s seen as a mobile snack-bar for the dreaded Scottish midge the idea of crossing the border during the summer months has long been dismissed but the annual winter trip, often with up to 20 others in tow, has more than made up for the self imposed travel ban of summer.

Unfortunately, well actually is not do to misfortune but due to deliberate Government policy, next February’s trip will almost certainly be the last – and quite possibly the last foray north of Hadrian’s Wall I ever take. With summer already a no-go the winter months were a highlight of the year, offering a wilderness unique in Britain and opportunities for learning and practising skills essential on snow clad hills. More than that, though, it gave an opportunity to relax, recharge and simply revel in some of the finest mountain country in Europe.
