A North Sea energy island surrounded by wind farms powering British homes and beyond could be a reality before 2030.
National Grid is in talks with two parties about building an island that would use wind farms to supply electricity to millions of homes in northwest Europe. The idea envisages offshore wind farms that have a much larger capacity than those in use today, with subsea electricity cables taking the energy to whichever country needs it most
Nicola Medalova, of National Grid told New Scientist magazine: “We are in tripartite discussions over an energy island that the UK would likely connect to.” She would not name the two other parties the company is talking to. National Grid also declined to confirm the parties involved.
