The SNP’s plans to back a temporary ban on AI data centre developments have been slammed by business leaders, who say it risks “undermining economic growth” across the country.
The party has confirmed it is considering introducing national planning guidance for hyperscale AI data centres following growing pressure from communities, local authorities and the Scottish Greens.
A SNP spokesperson said they are “reviewing what action can be taken” to balance the centre’s growth with the government’s climate goals.
They said: “AI data centres are evolving at pace, and the SNP fully recognises the concerns about the environmental impact and the impact on energy resources of hyperscale Data Centres.
“The Scottish Government is currently reviewing what action can be taken to help balance the rapid expansion of such centres with our national energy and climate goals – including a potential pause on applications.” https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/26257521.scotland-risks-losing-billions-ai-centre-ban-put-place/?fbclid=IwY2xjawS41DBleHRuA2FlbQMxMDAAc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHv9ei2RUjmFsNT3gs41AtOwqMtoYFcUTpRoUwKPYLg0pIABbx8jUI8mzSsVl_aem_i9OAnmfl2ONPvNG6YlHE7Q
