THE latest stage of construction is under way to improve the electricity
network on the Kintyre peninsula.

A sub-station is being built at Crossaig on Kintyre, Argyll and Bute, to
connect the peninsula via an underwater cable.

Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission (SHE Transmission), part of the SSE
Group, says the secondary link will significantly increase the security of
electricity supply to the area.

Much of the peninsula was without power in March when a snowstorm damaged
pylons in Crossaig.

The upgrade involves installing a 25-mile cable from Crossaig to Hunterston
on the Ayrshire coast.

Argyll and Bute MSP Michael Russell visited the team behind the Kintyre
Hunterston project today.

The £200 million investment by SHE Transmission is a “significant landmark”
for the local economy, he said, adding: “It will be warmly welcomed for
improving the security of supply to Kintyre as well as unlocking the
potential for the area’s renewable generation which is not only a boost for
local communities, it will make a significant contribution to the Scottish
Government’s ambitious renewable energy targets.”

SSE transmission director David Gardner said the Kintyre Hunterston project
plays a key part in the £1.4bn investment programme.

The link is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2015.
